Fishing Report – Los Vaqueros Reservoir – 5/26/2011

General Conditions

Striped bass fishing continues to provide the best action. Anglers also caught a few big catfish, some nice trout as well as some largemouth bass. As usual anglers at Los Vaqueros catch lots of BIG fish. We might not have the big numbers of fish but there is always a chance to catch something special.

The cool weather and wind has kept the water temperature between 60 and 61 degrees.

Trout

Nightcrawlers are the best choice for trout. You can float them with a marshmallow, inflate them or fish them under a bobber. Anglers also take some trout on powerbait. One angler took a limit of trout on green powerbait. If you are bait fishing from a boat try the backs of coves and cast close to shore. Trout are in great shape and averaging between 2 and 3 lbs. Top trout weighed in at 4.7lbs. Two anglers fishing nightcrawlers and green powerbait caught 7 fish weighing 20lbs total. They were in a boat and hit different spots all over the reservoir. Another angler caught 3 trout in the mouth of Cox cove. His 3 fish were all in the 2.5lb range. Over all trout fishing is just fair but every day we see at least a few trout with an occasional limit checked in.

Largemouth Bass

Anglers with the patience to put in time on the water are catching largemouth in reasonable numbers. As always senko’s provide the best opportunity for success. Top bass for the week was 6.5lbs. Please release our bass as this is their time of the year to spawn.

Stripers

Fishing for stripers continues to be solid. Anglers fishing with bait and anglers trolling rattletraps are catching nice fish from shakers (under 18 inches) to fish around 18lbs. As in all fishing some anglers do better than others. On the same day we will have boats that may not catch a fish to boats that catch and release 20 or so stripers in all sizes. We had 2 anglers catch their 2 fish limits in 45 minutes trolling. They were trolling rattle traps in the middle of the reservoir. You need some luck but there is a lot of skill involved. Keeping mixing it up until you start catching fish then stick with it. Top striper for the week was 15lbs.

Salmon

Nothing reported this week.

Catfish

The catfish here are big. There were 2 fish checked in at 19lbs and 20lbs. We don’t have big numbers of catfish but if you catch one it is going to be over 10 lbs. We hope to plant some smaller catfish starting in mid or late June. We also had several catfish over 20lbs reported caught and released.
